Javed Safdar Tanwiri

Javed Safdar Tanwiri is a Consultant at Vellani & Vellani, having joined the firm in 1979. He holds a Commerce degree from the University of Karachi (St. Patrick's College, Karachi) and an LL.B from the University of Karachi (S.M. Law College, Karachi). He is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He has maintained a special interest in intellectual property matters throughout his career, and has been involved in a wide range of litigation and commercial matters concerning trademarks, geographical indications, designs, copyrights, electronic commerce law, and general matters such as co-operative societies, rent, and succession. His experience includes the preparation, processing and prosecution of applications, oppositions, rectifications, appeal and suit pleadings, and other actions before the Pakistan Trade Marks Office and various courts across Pakistan, including the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He has also conducted proceedings before the Pakistan Copyright Board, Controller of Patents, and Registrar of Designs. He has delivered lectures on intellectual property at the Sindh Judicial Academy and has experience as in-house counsel in the corporate sector, having worked for Shell and ICI. He has served as Joint Secretary, Senior Vice Chairman-II, and Senior Vice Chairman-I of the Pakistan Industrial and Intellectual Property Rights Association (PIPRA). He is a member of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), the International Trademarks Association (INTA), and the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA), among others.
